Description
Xavier Capdevila, MD, PhD is Full Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine and Chair at the Medical University of Montpellier, France, and Head of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Lapeyronie University Hospital. He is a member of Inserm Unit U1051 at the Montpellier NeuroSciences Institute. Prof Capdevila has held major leadership roles within national and European societies, including President of the Scientific Committee and later President of the French Society of Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine (SFAR), President of the French College of Anesthesiologists–Intensivists, and Council Member of the European Society of Anaesthesiology.
His clinical and research interests focus on perioperative medicine, regional anesthesia, continuous regional techniques, acute postoperative pain management, and postoperative rehabilitation, with particular emphasis on patient outcomes. These interests have resulted in more than 330 clinical and experimental studies, notably in adult and pediatric orthopedic surgery, as well as experimental investigations into the myotoxic and neurotoxic effects of local anesthetics. Prof Capdevila has authored over 320 original articles in international peer-reviewed journals (94% Q1), with Google Scholar metrics exceeding 18,500 citations and an H-index of 70.
Prof Capdevila has played a prominent editorial role in leading journals, including Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (Executive Handling Editor), Anesthesia Critical Care and Pain Medicine (Associate Editor), and Anesthesia & Analgesia (Editorial Board). He is a frequent reviewer for more than 20 high-impact journals. An internationally recognized educator, he has delivered over 300 international and 250 national invited lectures and contributed extensively to medical education with more than 380 book chapters. In recognition of his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, he was appointed Knight of the French National Order of the Legion of Honor on December 31, 2020
